Eleanor

From Washington, ½ mile west on Madison (U.S. 54) Iola Cemetery. While you’re in the cemetery, look for the outhouse on the west side near the row of trees. This type of outhouse, built with cement pads, a metal roof, and good ventilation, resulted from a project spearheaded by Eleanor Roosevelt to help fight typhoid fever through better sanitation. The outhouses became a New Deal project, and because of the First Lady’s role, they became known as the “Eleanor,” and the nickname stuck.
