City of Beautiful Maples
In 1918, when T.H. Korthanke and his wife moved to their home at 200 Miami, a stately maple tree stood on the property. Korthanke was inspired to plant seeds from this tree, and as the seedlings grew he shared them with anyone who agreed to care for them. As a result, mature maples grow all around town and give Hiawatha a beautiful red-maple glow in the fall.
