Battle of Baxter Springs

Also known as the Baxter Springs Massacre, on October 6, 1863, William Quantrill's Confederate guerillas attacked Fort Blair in Baxter Springs. Soldiers at the fort fought off the attackers with the help of a Howitzer, but on leaving Fort Blair, the guerrillas came upon a Union wagon train led by General James Blunt. The Confederates, greatly outnumbering the Union forces, tragically massacred most of Blunt's command. A replica of the earth and log Fort Blair is at this site, and a kiosk provides information.
