Independence Mount Hope Cemetery

William Inge (1913-1973) and his family are buried at the south end of the cemetery, just north of Oak and 5th. Look for a large gray granite Inge family stone. Not far from the cemetery entrance off Elm, a granite stone marks the grave of Dr. George Tann (1825-1909), a physician for Laura Ingalls’ family. Added to the stone, a white sign reads, “A negro doctor that doctored the Ingalls for malaria in 1870.” To locate Tann’s gravestone, take the west drive to the center of the cemetery. A special feature in Mount Hope is the two-mile limestone retaining wall, built by the WPA in 1934, surrounding the entire cemetery. Look for the many sunburst designs incorporated into the rock on the outside of the wall.
