Ancient Deposits Scenic Back Road

From Carthage (U.S. 54/160) in Meade, 8 miles south on 23, 4 miles east on V, stairstep 12¾ miles east and south on 22 (becomes W, 23, X, 25, Aa, 26), 5 miles east on Ee, then 21 miles north and west on 31 (becomes Aa, 30, Y, 29, S, 27) to U.S. 160. At 17½ miles into the journey, just east of 25 on Y, you’ll find Mennonite names in the tiny Kleine Gemeinde Cemetery. Throughout your drive through southern Meade County, a handful of homes and a few cattle herds are set against this red, rugged, and remote route, whose geography has resulted from erosion of ancient sea deposits. For a paved-road version of this back-road drive, visit Meade State Park.
