Battle of Punished Woman's Fork

From K-96, 9¾ miles north on U.S. 83, 1¼ miles west and north on K-95, then ¼ mile west on unnamed gravel road, and follow the signs. In this area Northern Cheyennes clashed with U.S. Army soldiers while attempting to return to their homes in Montana after having been removed to Oklahoma. It was a pivotal event in the larger Northern Cheyenne exodus of 1878-1879. Until recently, access to this area was restricted, but it is now open to the public. Signage and trails take you to key points of the confrontation and help you understand the events that occurred here. Information and exhibits pertaining to this battle are at the El Quartelejo Museum, 902 W. 5th in Scott City. (NRHP)
