Vegetarian Colony
From Bridge, 4½ miles south on 9th (becomes 1200, then 1150). In 1856 60 families, members of the Vegetarian Kansas Emigration Company headed by Henry S. Clubb, moved here to form an Octagon settlement, a type of colony devoted to communal and healthy (vegetarian) living. Severe hardships and illness forced most families to abandon the failing community within a year. A marker on the west side of the road relates the unusual tale of the Vegetarian Colony. Additional information is at the Allen County Museum in Iola.
