Woodmen Circle

From Main, ¼ mile east on U.S. 54, then ¾ mile north on 2200 (Gas City Cemetery). Look for a tall stone tree stump engraved “Woodmen Circle” above the name Maggie McKeon. Woodmen Circle was a women’s auxiliary of the Woodmen of the World, an 1890s fraternal organization that helped members during financially difficult times. Members carried life insurance policies that provided for these customized and hand-carved gravestones. The tombstone program, which created an obvious identity with the organization, ended in the 1920s, although the Woodmen Circle still exists today.
