Small-Town Scenic Drive

Barton County, KS

Small-Town Scenic Drive

If you enjoy driving and finding little places off the beaten path, head to northern Barton County in the Smoky Hills region. Look skyward and follow the church steeples and grain elevators, which lead you from one small town to the next. Start in Olmitz (population 115) at NW 90 and NW 105 and follow the county blacktops to Galatia (population 39), Susank (population 34), Beaver (unincorporated) to end in Odin (unincorporated). Post rock fences, abandoned homesteads, limestone buildings, and lush crops accompany you through this hilly landscape, and a little bar and grill await you in most of the towns. The clock towers on the churches in Olmitz and Odin are landmark pieces.
