Settlement of Doniphan County

Founded in 1855, Doniphan was the first named county in the state. Bearing the surname of Alexander Doniphan, a colonel in the Mexican War, the county thrived in those early days thanks to prevalent steamboat travel on the Missouri River. Immigrants from Switzerland, France, and Germany settled the area, and due to the landscape of hills and valleys, it earned the nickname Little Switzerland.
