County Cemetery and Poor House

From I-135 at Salina, 3½ miles west on K-140, then 1¼ miles south on Lightville. It’s a rare sight to see a sign announcing a county cemetery. No longer in use, the cemetery once belonged to what was called the county farm and asylum for the poor. Each grave for the 62 burials between 1873 and 1927 is marked with a simple white cross, and names of the interred are listed on a plaque. The three-story, red-brick former county poor house is now St. Francis Community Services and can be seen northwest of the cemetery. A historical marker at the cemetery tells the story.
