521 Lincoln. Like many Kansans and those from around the world, Wamego resident J.C. Rogers attended the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of the New World. At the close of the event, Rogers bought exposition paintings and artifacts to adorn this theatre, which he opened in 1895 and duly named the Columbian. The silver iron eagle above the exterior entrance is a replica of a 13-foot iron eagle that he bought at the exposition. Rogers also obtained eight 11x17-foot murals. In 1929 the theatre became a movie house, then closed in 1950. The building sat empty for 40 years until community leaders decided to showcase it once again. They found and refurbished six of the murals that now are featured masterpieces. The decor throughout is elegant, combining rich colors with beautiful woodwork, large mirrors, and chandeliers.
