Hotel Stilwell
In 1889, in an attempt to make his little mining town appear more metropolitan and thereby attract new capital, financier Arthur Stilwell constructed this grand downtown hotel. The grandeur is evident in the lobby, which features a stained-glass dome and medallions around the hanging lights. In its day, the hotel hosted such renowned figures as Susan B. Anthony, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Jennings Bryan. Above the outdoor balcony, a carved limestone griffin guards the property. Restored in 1997, the hotel today houses apartments. For a tour of the lobby, call to make an appointment. (NRHP)
