Butler County Historical Society Museum and Kansas Oil Museum

The story of oil is an important one in this area, from its geology and boomtowns to the people and their social history. Kids can play and learn through a special hands-on exhibit, and all ages marvel at the working scale model oil refineries and rotary rigs. At the Kansas Oil Hall of Fame you're introduced to such entrepreneurs as Al Derby and W.G. Skelly. On the museum grounds are replica stores of a typical 1920s oil town, a "shotgun" house, and oil-field equipment. Aside from the oil history, the county museum presents an excellent portrayal of the Flint Hills and life in Butler County, from Native American habitation through the development of farming and ranching. Admission charge. Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
