Deafy Boular Statue
From Main, 1 block north on 5th. The plaque on this Aleda Haug sculpture tells the story of William “Deafy” Boular (1869-1953), a deaf man who had lost both his legs in a train accident when he was 10 years old. Overcoming adversity, Boular wore custom-designed boots on his stumps and became a champion bricklayer, once laying 46,000 paving bricks in less than eight hours. His boots are preserved in the Atchison County Historical Society Museum.
