Benjamin Hobbs
From E. Washington, 2½ miles north on K-99, then east onto a small roadside pull over. In 1933 local students created an endearing tribute to the county’s first teacher, who had died more than 60 years earlier. The students donated funds to improve the gravesite of 23-year-old Benjamin Hobbs, who died in 1871. Although his grave was not in a field at the time, a wire-fenced field now covers the site, which is marked with a plaque, a decorative wrought iron fence, and a concrete foundation to protect the grave. If you walk east toward the wire fence you’ll see a red sign noting Hobbs’ birth and death dates and can view his burial site farther to the east.
