Carry Nation Home
The home, on its original site, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Interpretive signs provide an excellent background of the temperance fighter Carry Nation (8 Wonders of Kansas - People). Carry’s hatchet, Bible, hat, valise, WCTU pin, and a few pieces of furniture are some of her personal items on display. Carry’s passionate opposition to alcohol resulted from her first husband’s alcoholism, from which he died. Her second husband, David Nation, a preacher, disapproved of her extreme views, and the couple divorced in 1901. A large portrait shows Carry with the divorce decree, which states that desertion—on her part—was the grounds for divorce. (NRHP)
