Walter Johnson in Coffeyville
Baseball Hall of Famer Walter “The Big Train” Johnson pitched for the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1927, winning the World Series in 1924. Johnson was born in Humboldt but lived in Coffeyville during the baseball off-season. Avid baseball fans will enjoy seeing the town attractions that pay tribute to this great player-—the monument and illustrated plaque behind the ball field backstop in Walter Johnson Park (from U.S. 169, east on 8th); the mural by Don Sprague (223 W. 9th); and the exhibit at the Dalton Defender’s Museum (814 S. Walnut).
