Shelterbelts
Planted to slow the wind and decrease soil erosion, shelterbelts can be seen in many areas of the state, but good examples are along the north side of U.S. 50 in Stafford County. The Civilian Conservation Corps planted many in the 1930s as part of a Soil Conservation Service program. Look for long, wide rows of trees. A variety of species were planted because the survivability factors for each were not entirely known.
