Fort Hays State Historic Site
1472 U.S. 183 Alternate. Pete Felten's limestone buffalo at the entrance is your signal that you're about to go back to 1867. The military fort was established in that year to protect travelers on the Smoky Hill Trail and workers building the Kansas Pacific Railway. The original blockhouse, guardhouse, and officers' quarters still stand, and excellent interpretive signs relate the story of military presence in the West. Spend some time examining the storytelling carvings on the guardhouse limestone walls. Start in the visitor center to gain an understanding of this historic fort. Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission charge. (NRHP)
