Kanza Heritage Trail
From Main in Council Grove, 2 blocks south on 5th, 2 blocks east on Walnut, 3½ miles southeast on Dunlap, ½ mile east on X, then ¼ mile north on 525 (in Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park). A self-guided, two-mile trail loops through the prairie and riparian valley and past the former Kaw Agency building, stone hut ruins, and a replica earth lodge. Designs reflecting Kanza culture are seen in two large concrete circles on the path. A bronze plaque of the Kaw Tribal Seal is at the center of one circle, and a prayer is on the outer rim. On the other circle’s rim are the names of each of the clans in the Kaw tribe. Colorful Kanza patterns are embedded in cast stone sections. An important feature visible from the trail is the Monument to the Unknown Kanza Warrior, a 35-foot-high limestone obelisk erected in 1925 by local citizens as a tribute to the Kanzas native to this area. Discovery of a Kanza’s remains in a nearby area prompted the creation of the monument. The remains have been reinterred in the monument’s base. The Kaw Nation asks that you honor him by maintaining a respectful distance.
