Old, Old U.S. 81
The original highway ran north-south through town. To find the best evidence of the old, narrow concrete road, go 1 mile north of Bennington on N. 180, then west on Granite (the original 81). The road is rough but still in use. About ¾ mile west, watch closely, and on the north side you’ll see a Kansas Federal Aid Project marker stating that the road was built in 1922. The old beaten highway continues 8½ miles north and west in stair-step fashion to K-106 south of Minneapolis.
