Ellis County Historical Society and Museum Complex
100 W. 7th. The museum is at home in a 1926 addition to the 1879 First Presbyterian Church (the oldest church in Hays; NRHP). Inside this stately red-brick structure you are introduced to area personalities such as Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, George Custer, and George Grant. Exhibits also focus on locally significant topics including the Dust Bowl, water, and ethnic immigration. The museum complex comprises the 1879 stone church, a Volga German Haus, a reconstructed typical early immigrant home, Younger Harness Shop, and the Hays Fire Department Museum. Behind the museum is a tall piece of limestone that Buffalo Bill Cody had used for target practice. Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission charge.
