National Orphan Train Complex

300 Washington. From 1854 to 1929 more than 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children traveled west on orphan trains to relocate from overcrowded cities in the East. Your journey through this incredible experience begins at the Morgan-Dowell Research Center, then to a full-sized railcar representing an orphan train, and onto the adjacent 1917 Union Pacific depot (NRHP). Here the story is told through compelling photos, interpretive signage, and outstanding artifacts including a ledger with names of actual riders. Admission charge. Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 1-4 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Monday by appointment (make 4 days in advance).
