Historic Telephone Building

From Carthage (U.S. 54/160), ½ block north on Spring Lake. This 1932 stunner of a small blonde-brick building is the work of architect Glen Thomas, who designed the outstanding Wichita North High School and the high school in Dighton. Terra cotta buffalo heads created by Bruce Moore, who later earned worldwide fame, look out from the top of two columns flanking the front door. Bas-relief sculptures, including those of a tipi and a buffalo against blue sky backgrounds, adorn the building’s front corners to the left and right of the entrance. This structure was created for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and is used today by AT&T.
