Historic Ritchie House
1116 SE Madison. Topeka’s oldest standing house was built in 1856 by ardent abolitionist John Ritchie. Ritchie, involved in bringing Kansas into the Union as a free state, was also a Topeka founder. He and his wife, Mary, supported women’s rights, managed an Underground Railroad station, and created the first housing and schooling for area blacks. The brick and limestone home has been renovated and offers a hands-on history experience. Entrance fee. Tuesday-Thursday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
