Historic Airmail Arrow

Anthony, KS

Historic Airmail Arrow

From LL&G, 2 miles west on K-2. A 1929 airmail remnant can be seen at the Municipal Airport north of K-2. In the early days of night-flying mail service, giant concrete arrows were constructed, flat on the ground, to guide pilots. Each arrow, painted bright yellow, was at the base of a tall tower supporting a beacon light that illuminated the arrow. Placed every 10 miles, each illuminated arrow directed the pilot on his route. At Anthony the tower and beacon still stand, and much of the arrow is visible, although it has been shortened due to highway expansion.
