George Washington Carver Homestead

From Hamilton, ¼ mile east on K-96, then 1½ miles south on 523. Here a memorial rock honors George Washington Carver and marks the site of his homestead. Carver filed a homestead claim on 160 acres in 1886 and built a sod house, but no buildings stand on the land today. When Carver sold this property he used the money to attend college and, as we know, he later became a world-renowned scientist. More than 1,500 attended the 1953 dedication of this memorial that honors this famous man. (NRHP)
