Fort Bissell
501 Fort Bissell. The original fort was built not for military use but to protect settlers who homesteaded here in the 1870s. The fort was demolished in 1878 but re-created on this site in 1961 to tell its history. Start your tour at the fort visitor center which features county displays, then follow the boardwalk through the replica stockade, an 1885 general mercantile store, 1872 log cabins, an 1887 schoolhouse, a sod house built by students—and stocks used for punishment!
