Memorial Peace Park

Medicine Lodge, KS

Memorial Peace Park

From Main, 1¾ miles east on U.S. 160 to Airport. Look for the overhead entrance sign welcoming you to the park. Here a marker relates the story of the 1867 Medicine Lodge peace treaty council, which involved U.S. soldiers and commissioners and as many as 15,000 Plains Indians including chiefs Satanta and Black Kettle. Contrary to general public impression, this treaty did not bring peace to the frontier. Nonetheless, every several years an iconic Peace Treaty Pageant is held in this park’s natural amphitheater to celebrate the treaty signing.
