Council Grove Treaty

Council Grove, KS

Council Grove Treaty

A treaty signed in 1825 with the Great Osage and the Little Osage Nations allowed for overland wagon traffic through this area on the Santa Fe Trail. The council took place under the Council Oak, thus the town’s name. Council Grove was the pre-eminent rendezvous point for wagon trains proceeding west from 1829 to the early 1860s.
