Battle of Coon Creek

From Niles (U.S. 183), 2 1/2 miles east on U.S. 50. On the south side of the highway, a historic marker captures the story of an 1848 battle between a large group of Plains Indians and an army train of 60 wagons along the Santa Fe Trail. The Indians sustained heavy casualties and when a young Apache returned to recover one of their own, the soldiers held fire. Legend has it that this young man was Geronimo, a future Apache leader.
