Gerth Cabin

Greeley, KS

Gerth Cabin

From Brown, 1 block south on Main, 1½ blocks west on Bondi, then just south on Trego. Valentin Gerth, purportedly the first white settler in Anderson County, built this rough-hewn log house in 1856. Moved a few miles to this riverbank location, the cabin may have been used as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The cabin is not usually open, but just exploring around the outside environs make it worth a stop. Private or group tours can be arranged by emailing, information@historyandersoncoks.org or calling, 785.448.5740. Gerth and his wife, Mary, are buried in Greeley Cemetery just north of town.
