Warkentin House
This opulent 1887 house was built for Mennonite entrepreneur Bernhard Warkentin. He was largely responsible for the major Mennonite migrations to America in the 1870s, the introduction of Turkey red wheat, and in establishing the Kansas wheat milling industry. This home's leatherette wainscoting, ball-and-spindle fretwork, and dentil block design dispel the myth that all Mennonites were austere people. Admission charge. Call 316.284.3642 or 316.283.3113. April-May and September-December, Saturday-Sunday 1-4:30 p.m.; June-August, Friday-Sunday 1-4:30 p.m. Also open by appointment.
