Walker Army Airfield
From Walker, 1 mile west on Old U.S. 40, 1¼ curving miles north on 370 (becomes Victoria), then 2 miles north on Vincent. One of the nation’s first B-29 Superfortress bomber training air bases, the WWII airfield, now abandoned, leaves only tall brick chimneys, a water tower, remains of hangars and other structures, and huge “No Trespassing” signs. You can drive along the edge of the field and picture the almost 6,000 military and civilian personnel who were stationed here from 1942 to 1946. At that time the base comprised three runways, five hangars, a hospital, recreational centers, and more.
