Valley View Cemetery
One of the most unique tombstones in the state may be the granite engraved monument topped with an auto engine (restored by the Finney County Historical Society in 2022). Michael Runnels died in 1927 when his car crashed into a train. One theory holds that Michael loved his car so much that he wanted to die with it. Another theory purports that the grave marker was created to remind young people to drive carefully. This peculiar monument stands in the northeast quadrant of the cemetery under a cedar tree. Bronze plaques in the cemetery office relate the interesting history of Valley View and provide gravesite locations of town founders C.J. “Buffalo” Jones, William Fulton, James Fulton, and John Stevens. Locations are also given to the graves of the Herb Clutter family from Holcomb and to the infamous bank-robbing Fleagle Gang of the 1920s, and to a monument remembering 13 young American Indian men who worked in the sugar beet fields, died during the influenza epidemic of 1918, and were buried here in unmarked graves.
