Steele Homestead
Herbert Steele homesteaded here in 1888, and in 1909 he and his wife, Eliza, built their sandstone home just above Ladder Creek. Paths lead you behind the house to what was once a garden. Graceful old cottonwoods now shade the area. The Steeles wanted their homestead to become a public park and recreation area and sold their 640 acres to the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Commission in 1928. To see the inside of the house, inquire at the park office. (NRHP)
