Stapleton No.1
From N. Haverhill, ¾ mile west on 6th, ¼ mile northwest on Parallel, 1 mile north on Boyer, ½ mile north on W. Refinery, then sharp left after the cattle guard. Stapleton No.1 was the 1915 discovery well in the El Dorado oil field. Soon Oil Hill, a boomtown to support the industry, sprang up nearby. Use your imagination to picture 2,500 oil-field workers living here in “shotgun” houses. A stone monument and an oil rig mark the well site. Enhance your visit to this historic spot by first stopping at the Kansas Oil Museum.
