Maxwell Wildlife Refuge
From Railroad, 6½ miles north on Main (becomes 27), then 1¼ miles west on Pueblo. Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful mixed-grass prairie home to herds of 160 buffalo and 70 elk. Pueblo is an open range public road through the refuge, and for a two-mile stretch (from the first cattle guard on Pueblo to Battle Hill) you may find buffalo in your path. For an unobstructed panoramic view of the Smoky Hills prairie, climb to the top of the observation tower just west of the visitor center gate. Tram rides take you into the pastures where you’ll almost always see buffalo (elk appear more often in the winter), and in season the wildflowers and grasses are abundant in their glory. Refuge open to drivers daily. Tours given Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Tour charge; reservations required.
