Guard of the Plains Sculpture

I-70 rest area, mile marker 336 (3¾ miles east of Paxico). Eastbound travelers can easily spot the tall abstract work created by James Johnson in 1970 standing on the hilltop near the eastbound rest area. But to walk to the sculpture, you must start at the westbound rest area (you can drive to the westbound side via a connector road between the two rest areas). Just west of the parking lot, a quarter-mile wooded trail leads to the sculpture. The path is narrow and a little steep but it’s worth the climb to see the "Guard of the Plains" and a splendid view of the Flint Hills.
