Evelyn Briggs Baldwin

This future Arctic explorer moved from Iowa to Oswego in 1869 with his parents and spent his youth here. He became a meteorologist and later went on two Arctic expeditions and led a third. He became a popular lecturer throughout the country, relating tales of his exploring adventures. The Historical Museum has an excellent collection of his personal belongings, photographs and items from his explorations, and copies of his book The Search for the North Pole. Baldwin is buried in Oswego Cemetery. From Commercial, 2¼ miles west and north on 6/U.S. 160. In the center of the east side, a tall red granite monument with an urn marks his grave.
