Christmas City of the High Plains
WaKeeney is known as the “Christmas City of the High Plains.” Since 1950s volunteers have decorated a four-block area of downtown during the holidays. A beautiful spectacle is created with thousands of lights, miles of electrical wiring, fresh greenery and garland, and the centerpiece—a 35-foot-tall tree of fresh pine. All year round colorful Christmas tree sculptures dot main street, celebrating the town’s claim to fame and immense source of community pride.
