Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park
From Main in Council Grove, 2 blocks south on 5th, 2 blocks east on Walnut, 3½ miles southeast on Dunlap, ½ mile east on X, then ¼ mile north on 525. Once owned by the Kaw (Kanza) Nation, this area was part of the original Council Grove Kaw Reservation. The Kaws were forcibly removed from Kansas in 1873 to a new reservation in Oklahoma. Chief Allegawaho, who became the head of the Kaw tribe in 1867 (and was succeeded in 1875 by Chief Washunga), made an eloquent protest against his people being forced from their beloved homeland. The Kanza Heritage Trail explains key sites in the park.
