Town Name

Garden City, KS

Town Name

The story goes that a traveler at the train station asked Luticia Fulton the name of the emerging town. Luticia’s husband, William, and his brother James were the first to file on land in Finney County and suggested the name Fulton Town. When Luticia said that she didn’t like the proposed name, the traveler, inspired by Luticia’s garden, said, “You ought to call it Garden City.” The name stuck. You can see a modern version of Luticia’s flower garden on the Historical Museum grounds, 403 S. 4th. At the former Santa Fe railway station in the 100 block of N. Main a handsome brick and sculpted stone memorial by Kansas artist Kivel Yankey relates the tale of Luticia Fulton and the naming of the town.
