Pawnee Rock State Historic Site
From U.S. 56, ½ mile north on Centre. Years ago this natural landmark stood much taller, but in the 1870s settlers and the railroad quarried much of its rock for building purposes. With the help of interpretive signs and a monument, you will appreciate the importance and striking qualities of this former observation point on the Plains. A Dakota sandstone lookout tower stands atop the rock. The 360-degree view is much different today, but imagine spotting a covered wagon train traveling the Santa Fe Trail (now U.S. 56) more than 175 years ago. Can you find the memorial plaque to William Becknell, “Father of the Santa Fe Trail,” on the face of the rock?
