1345 Jayhawk (KU campus). Much of the rich ornamentation on the building’s exterior suggests the study of plants and animals. Four floors of exhibits present ancient and modern animals, from fossil dinosaurs to grizzly bears. The horse Comanche, draped in his army blanket, is displayed on the fourth floor. Comanche was the only living member of Custer’s Seventh U.S. Cavalry found on the battlefield following the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. Hours vary seasonally. Usually Tuesday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 12-4 p.m. Donation suggested. (NRHP)
