Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site
1200 E. Kansas City. From E. Santa Fe, 1 mile northeast on Kansas City. Mahaffie is the last remaining stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail open to the public, and a visit here will transport you back to the days of the western trails. Start your journey with the excellent displays at the Heritage Center then proceed down the steps to the stone dining hall and kitchen. Here Lucinda Mahaffie and her help served more than 50 meals a day to stagecoach passengers and other travelers during the 1860s. The impressive Mahaffie home, built of two-foot-thick native limestone walls, is the centerpiece of this historic farm, which encompasses a stone icehouse, timber frame barn, blacksmith shop, and period garden. If the buildings are closed, you’re welcome to tour the grounds. Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The house is not open on Monday or Tuesday. Admission charge. (NRHP)
