Little House on the Prairie
From 27th in Independence, 1¾ miles west on U.S. 160, 6¾ miles southwest on U.S. 75, 1½ miles south on 2700, then 1 mile west on 3000. Laura Ingalls Wilder, well known for her Little House books, lived here briefly with her family when she was a child in 1869-1871. Visitors will find an open rural setting comprising a reproduced cabin, an 1872 schoolhouse, post office, 1920s barn, 1880s farmhouse, and a gift shop. When the buildings are closed, signage is available to guide you through the delightful site. March-October, daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m., weather permitting. Donation welcome.
