Kansas Museum of History
6425 SW 6th. This award-winning museum features excellent exhibits that tell the many fascinating stories of our state. The centerpiece is an 1880 locomotive, one of the first to run on the newly completed Santa Fe railway. Nearby, a biplane of A.K. Longren, the first Kansan to build an aircraft that flew successfully, hangs from the ceiling. You’ll see artifacts of famous Kansans such as Dwight Eisenhower, Carry Nation, and John Brown, and a collage from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s will tickle the fancy of many. A fine gift shop is filled with Kansas books, art, and many specialty items. The Great White Buffalo sculpture stands near the museum entrance. A nature trail meanders a little more than two miles through the prairie and woodland surrounding the Kansas History Center. (8 Wonders of Kansas - History)
