Gypsum Mines

Blue Rapids, KS

Gypsum Mines

The area once boasted four gypsum mines, but the Georgia-Pacific north of town on U.S. 77 is one of only two mines remaining in the state. In 1858 Frank Marshall, for whom the county is named, recognized the rock as gypsum. He burned it and produced plaster from the powder, which he used to build his house.
